Institute of Computer Science & Technology
ICST is the national key research institute in applied computer technology. Founded in 1983, ICST has been committing to the application of computer sciences and technologies to printing and publishing industries, including computer graphics and image process, Chinese information processing, network and database technologies etc. With comprehensive and systematic research works for over two decades, ICST made world-leading computer technological innovations and first-class IT application breakthroughs in the industries. As the result of the works, several technological revolutions in the printing and publishing industries has been successfully achieved and 5 National Awards of Science and Technology granted for ICST. There are two premier research centers as the affiliation of ICST: National Engineering Research Center on New Technology in E-Publishing and Center of Chinese Character Font Design.
In 21st century, responding to the trend of networking and digitalization of information technology, a number of research areas have initiated, including network publishing, digital audio and video, and information security technology.
Driven by real-world challenge and needs, the research works in ICST are focus on four areas: computer graphics and image processing, network and database, digital audio and video, and network and information security.
a) Computer Graphics and Image Processing with Application to Printing and Publishing Industries
Font: Develop font technologies to meet various applicstions. We have developed hundreds of fonts, covering various languages spoken in China and western countries. In particular, our Chinese fonts contains more than seventy thousand Chinese characters, and we own the most comprehensive intellectual property in Chinese font technologies in the world.
Page layout and composition technology: Develop interactive and integrated page layout and composition technologies for text, graphics, and images. We have developed advanced multilingual (including Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uigur, Kazakh, Yi, Korean, and Japanese) page layout and composition technologies and products; they have been widely used for type-setting of Chinese books, newspaper, and magazines around the world.
Out-put technology—Raster Image Processing. Raster image processing is a technology for transforming vector representation of text, graphics, and images into raster images. It serves the purpose of transforming page-information interpretation produced by a page description language into output-able data, and then transmitting the data to a specified output device. Such technology plays a critical role in e-publishing, and it consists of three components: rasterization, digital halftone, and color image management. We have developed a total of eight generations of output technologies and products, and we are one of a few agencies in the world owning such a comprehensive range of output technologies. These cutting-edge technologies and products have been well accepted by both domestic and international markets, and we have established a close cooperative relationship with many well-known international corporations.
b) Network and Database Technologies with Application to Publishing Industry
Digital asset management (DAM) for newspaper: Develop management technologies for digitalizing, networking, and integrating workflow of editorial and business operation in newspaper publishing. The technologies have five key components — editing, processing, storing, publishing/delivery, and reusing of various digital assets in news media, including the pages of newspaper, text/image manuscript, multimedia information, advertisement, and information regarding issuance. In addition, business management of digital asset is also part of the technologies. The News DAM System developed in ICST has been deployed by hundreds of Chinese newspaper publishers around the world.
E-book publishing: Develop digital publishing technologies for electronic book and newspapers, including digital right management (DRM) , digital content presention and transaction. We have developed an e-book publishing system called Apabi. Its customers include thousands of publishers and libraries; tens of thousands of e-books have been produced by the system, and these books have formed the largest DRM-protected e-book library in the world.
Database publishing: Develop automatic publishing technologies and products for database-based massive information. Such technologies and products have successfully entered the Japanese market, and totally have had about 300 customers, including the top four newspaper publishing groups in Japan and more than 250 publishers.
Content mining: Develop content-mining technologies and products leveraging natural language processing, on text, image, and video. During the past few years our scientists have published several scholarly papers on first-class international conferences and journals, and the related work has also found some real-world applications.
c) Digital Audio and Video Technologies
Digital audio and video control technologies—mainly technologies for managing source material of video content, controlling and monitoring video broadcasting, and managing broadcasting equipments. We have developed a control system for digital video and audio broadcasting, and it has found numerous customers in domestic TV stations and IPTV industry.
Content-based digital video analysis. During the past few years our scientists have published several scholarly papers on first-class international conferences and journals, and the related work has also found some real-world applications.
d) Network and Information Security
Honeynet technologies: Investigate honeynet-based monitoring and defending technologies for network security. We have developed a honeynet-based botnet monitoring system, and CNCERT/CC (the National Computer network Emergency Response technical Team/Coordination Center of China) has been deploying the system national-wide.
Micro-level security vulnerability analysis—mining security vulnerabilities in binary code. We have been investigating both static and dynamic approaches to software vulnerability, assuming non-availability of source code; we have already discovered a couple of previously unknown vulnerabilities.
High-performance computing platform for network security: We have been developing computing platform for network security, based on tight-coupling distributed architecture. One successful application of such platform is gateway-level P2P network monitoring. In addition, the platform has been incorporated into a solution package for network security, provieded by Intel Corporation.
Printed matter proliferation-prevention technology: We have developed a digital watermark technology, utilizing matrix and density-adjusting technologies. It is capable of tracking documents coming out of printers and preventing them from being copied. This technology has been licensed to an multi-national company, and has found some real-world applications.
Our innovations have fundamentally changed the Chinese printing and publishing industries, and have received a number of most prestigious scientific and technological awards in China.
“Control Technologies for Digital Video and Audio” won second prize Year-2007 National Scientific and Technological Advance Award. “Digital-Asset Management System for Newspaper” won second prize Year-2006 National Scientific and Technological Advance Award. “Apabi Digital Right Management System” was selected as one of year-2003 most influential technological inventions in China IT industry. “Electronic Publishing System” was selected as year-1995 top ten national scientific and technological achievements, and it also won first prize Year-1995 National Scientific and Technological Advance Award. “Laser Photocomposition System for Chinese Character Typesetting” was selected as year-1985 top ten national scientific and technological achievements; furthermore, it won first prize Year-1987 National Scientific and Technological Advance Award, and special prize Year-1991 National Major Technological Equipment Award.
Our scientists have published, as first-authors, a number of high-quality papers on first-class international conferences and journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (CSVT), ACM SIGGRAPH, ACM SIGMM, WWW, IJCAI, AAAI, ACL Conference (Association for Computational Linguistics), ACM SIGIR etc.
We have filed about 200 patent applications, and up-to-date twenty of them have got approved. More important, we own a system of patents to protect our core technologies. These patents include the fist European patent awarded to mainland Chinese (year 1987), a gold medal winner of Year-1989 China Patent and Invention Award, and a winner of Year-2006 outstanding China patents.
